Getting Around Honolulu

Getting around Honolulu is easy, whether you plan to rent a car or rely on rideshare services and public transportation. Most Hawaii Dance Expo attendees find that transportation is convenient, affordable, and readily available throughout their stay.

If you're staying in Ala Moana or Waikīkī, you may not need a rental car at all. Uber, Lyft, taxis, and Honolulu's public transportation system make it easy to travel between your hotel, the event venue, beaches, restaurants, and shopping areas.

✈️ From Honolulu International Airport (HNL)

After arriving at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), you'll have several transportation options to reach your hotel or the event venue.

🚘 Uber & Lyft

Uber and Lyft are the most popular transportation choices for Hawaii Dance Expo attendees.

Typical One-Way Fares

Airport → Ala Moana
Approximately $20–35

Airport → Waikīkī
Approximately $25–45

Airport → Aloha Dancesport Center
Approximately $20–35

Ride prices may increase during busy travel periods or late at night.

🚖 Taxi

Taxis are available 24 hours a day outside the airport terminals.

Typical fares:

Airport to Waikīkī:

Airport to Ala Moana:
$30–45

Taxi fares are generally higher than Uber or Lyft but remain a convenient option for visitors who prefer traditional taxi service.

🚍 TheBus (Honolulu Public Transportation)

TheBus is Honolulu's public transportation system and one of the most affordable ways to travel around Oʻahu.

If you're traveling from Honolulu International Airport (HNL) to Waikīkī or Ala Moana, the easiest route is Route 20, which serves the airport and continues to Waikīkī. 

Where Do I Catch the Bus?

After collecting your luggage:

• Exit the terminal and go to the Departure (Upper) Level.

• Follow the signs for "City Bus."

• The bus stops are located in the center median outside the terminals.

  • Terminal 1: Across from Lobby 7

  • Terminal 2: Between Lobbies 2 and 3

Which Bus Should I Take?

Route 20 – Waikīkī Beach & Hotels

This route stops at:

• Honolulu Airport (HNL)

• Ala Moana Center

• Waikīkī hotels

• Kūhiō Avenue

• Waikīkī Beach 

Fare

Approximately $3.25 per person.

A HOLO Card is recommended if you plan to use TheBus during your stay. It makes paying fares easier and allows convenient transfers. 

Good to Know

• Travel time to Waikīkī is approximately 45–60 minutes.

• Travel time to Ala Moana is approximately 30–40 minutes.

• If you're carrying several large suitcases, Uber or Lyft may be a more comfortable option.

🚆 Skyline Rail

Honolulu's Skyline rail system is the newest addition to Oʻahu's public transportation network.

At this time, Skyline primarily serves communities west of Honolulu and does not yet extend to Waikīkī or Aloha Dancesport Center.

Visitors staying in Waikīkī or Ala Moana will generally find Uber, Lyft, TheBus, or taxis to be more convenient.

🚗 Rental Cars

Renting a car is recommended if you plan to explore more of Oʻahu before or after Hawaii Dance Expo.

Popular destinations include:

• North Shore

• Kualoa Ranch

• Lanikai Beach

• Kailua

• Makapuʻu Lookout

• Hanauma Bay

• Dole Plantation

• Turtle Bay

Most major rental car companies operate directly from Honolulu International Airport.

🚶 Walking

Many visitors staying in Waikīkī enjoy walking to restaurants, shopping centers, and beaches.

Ala Moana Center to Ala Moana Beach Park:
Approximately 5 minutes

Walking is one of the best ways to experience Waikīkī.

🚲 Biki Bike Share

Biki is Honolulu's public bike-sharing system.

Stations are located throughout Waikīkī, Ala Moana, Kakaʻako, and Downtown Honolulu.

It's a fun way to explore nearby neighborhoods at your own pace.

🚐 Airport Shuttles

Several private companies provide shuttle service between Honolulu International Airport and Waikīkī hotels.

Shuttle service can be an economical choice for solo travelers or those who don't mind making multiple hotel stops along the way.

If you plan to rent a car, be aware that parking fees in Honolulu can add significantly to your travel budget.
